LA JOLLA, Calif. (3/25/25) – Thomas Schmidt played all three rounds par or better at Torrey Pines to earn medalist honors and the Arkansas State men's golf team finished second among 20 teams at the UC San Diego Invitational.
Schmidt capped off his second win of the season, fourth of his career, with an even-par 72 at Torrey Pines to complete the week at 5-under par 211. With his four career wins, Schmidt is tied with Zoltan Veress (1995-99) and David Faught (1993-97) for the second-most medalist honors in program history trailing only Zan Luka Stirn's (2017-22) five titles. Schmidt led the field with 15 birdies on the week where the scoring average finished at 77.07.
Three players were even par or 1-over par on Tuesday for the Red Wolves. Joining Schmidt at even-par in the final round was Jake Lile and Jake Wallis while Jack Maxey finished 1-over par. Lile finished the week at 9-over par 225 going 1-over par over the final 36 holes to place 18th while Wallis tied for 33rd with a total of 12-over par 228. Playing as an individual, Chris Somerfield tied for 24th at 10-over par 226. Milan Reed (+14) tied for 54th and Maxey (+16) tied for 65th to round out the Red Wolves in the field.
A-State finished two strokes off the team title won by New Mexico State at 21-over par. The Red Wolves compiled their best round of the week with a 1-over par 289 in the final round, but the Aggies shot 5-under par 283 to take the title. UC Irvine (+27), Sacramento State (+28) and Seattle (+35) completed the top five teams.
The Red Wolves continue their spring slate March 31-April 1 in the Cowboy Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Ariz. A-State wraps up the regular season at RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro April 14-15 with the A-State Spring Invitational.
