MARICOPA, Ariz. (4/1/25) – Wrapping up play in its penultimate regular season tournament, the Arkansas State men's golf team finished sixth among 23 teams at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic played at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes.
After play was suspended due to darkness Monday, the Red Wolves closed out a second round 4-under par 284 and followed with a final round 5-under 283 to total 16-under par 848 for the event. Long Beach took home the team title at 37-under par 827 with Iowa State (-23), San Diego (-21), Wichita State (-21) and Kansas (-18) rounding out the top five. A-State earned wins over Pacific (-15), Southern California (-10), Grand Canyon (-3), Cincinnati (-1), Cal State Fullerton (E), St. Mary's (+6), Wyoming (+7), UC Irvine (+8), Utah Valley (+9), Utah State (+9), Cal State Northridge (+18), Gonzaga (+19), Northern Colorado (+22), UT Arlington (+29), Air Force (+30), Weber State (+32) and Southern Utah (+47).
Freshman Jake Wallis finished with a third consecutive round under par to total 8-under par 208 and a tie for fourth. Following a first round 4-under par 68 and a second round 3-under par 69, Wallis recovered from a quadruple bogey on his first hole of the final round to finish at 1-under par 71. Chris Somerfield was par or better in all three rounds to tie for 21st with a total of 3-under par 213 (70-72-71) while Jake Lile totaled 2-under par 214 (71-74-69) to tie for 26th. Thomas Schmidt was also par or better each round finishing 1-under par 215 (72-71-72) and a tie for 35th while Jack Maxey placed 55th at 4-over par 220 (74-72-74).
The Red Wolves close out the regular season slate April 14-15 at RidgePointe Country Club and the A-State Spring Invitational. The Sun Belt Conference Championship follows April 21-24 at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
