JONESBORO, Ark. (5/1/26) – Arkansas State (27-18, 11-12 SBC) was shut out, 0-8 in the opening game of the series before bouncing back with a 6-0 shutout of their own in the series-opening doubleheader at Old Dominion (23-23, 10-13 SBC) Friday in Norfolk at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
A-State was stymied in the first game of the doubleheader, only logging one hit in the first three innings, from
Patrick Engskov in the second inning. The Monarchs stacked runs each inning, scoring one off a pair of hits in the first, two runs off another pair of hits in the second, and four runs in the third in a two-out rally.
The Red Wolves landed their second hit in the fourth and third hit in the 6th, but didn't find another the rest of the game in the 8-0 final, ODU scoring the final run in the seventh inning after a double and RBI-single.
Game two of the day was an inverted dynamic, with A-State commanding the mound all nine innings and dropping runs throughout to build the 6-0 win.
Scoreless through four innings,
Tyler Weimer started his first game of the season, allowing two hits and no free passes in his 5.1 innings on the bump. The sophomore tied his career high with six punch outs, ending four of his five full innings with a strikeout.
The Red Wolves broke the scoreless tie after loading the bases,
Cason Campbell dropping a single into the outfield to score two in the fifth inning.
Ryan Ashford handled 1.0 innings, letting up just one walk and no hits while striking out one.
The seventh inning saw some more traffic for A-State, back-to-back singles scoring another run, with Campbell earning his third RBI of the game.
The Arkansas State bats doubled the lead in the eighth. A walk and double put two in scoring position, and
Raul Torres lined a single into the right field corner, then after stealing second base, was batted home by
Joey McLaughlin III.
Cooper Garrison tossed the final 2.2 innings to earn his Sun Belt-best eight saves, relenting three total hits.
