Ashrafieh, Lebanon (3/20/14) - Former Arkansas State University men's basketball player Dewarick Spencer will continue his foreign professional career after recently signing a contract with Sagesse Al Hekmeh of the Lebanese Basketball League per a release issued by the Eurobasket News Center.
Spencer played two seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05) at Arkansas State and scored 1,073 points, which currently ranks 23rd among the program's all-time scoring leaders. The Mobile, Ala., native is also sixth on A-State's career charts in three-point field goals made (170) and three-point field goal percentage (.421) to date. A starter in all 57 A-State games played in, Spencer earned 2003-04 All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Second-Team plaudits.
Prior to signing with Sagesse Al Hekmeh, Spencer finished the 2013-14 season in the Chinese CBA league with Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank where he recorded per game averages of 25.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals in 18 appearances. The 6-4 guard started out this 2013-14 season with Petrochimi (Superleague) in Iran and averaged 24.2 points and 4.0 rebounds an outing in five games.
Spencer spent most of the 2012-13 campaign with the Jilin (China) Northeast Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He averaged a team fifth-best 28.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.5 steals in 31 contests to place among the squad's top two performers in each statistical category. For his efforts, Spencer was tabbed an Asia-Basket.com All-Chinese CBA Honorable Mention selection. He then moved his talents to Division A Al Riyadi of the Lebanese Basketball League and helped win a regular-season championship title while team highs in points (24.5 ppg.), rebounds (4.2 rpg.), assists (3.8 agp.), and steals (1.6 spg.) in 14 encounters. While at Al Riyadi, Spencer helped his team capture the Lebanese Cupercup in 2012.
The former A-State backcourt player has received a number of honors, including being selected the Asia-Basketball.com All-West Asia Basketball Association (WABA) League Player of the Year and the Asia-Basket.com All-WABA League First-Team Award both in 2012.
Spencer is currently in his ninth season of professional basketball overseas and has played previously in France (Le Mans and Chorale de Roanne), Greece, Italy (Cimberio Varese and Granarolo Bologna, Turkey (Anadoly Efes), and in the Ukraine (Budivelynk).
In his initial season (2003-04) at A-State, Spencer averaged a team-leading 19.0 points (533 pts.) with 5.6 rebounds per contest (157 rebs.) as a 28-game starter while making a squad-high 86 three-point field goals. He would average a team-best 18.6 points (540 pts.) and 4.4 rebounds (127 rebs.) per outing for the 2004-05 campaign, starting all 29 contests. Spencer, who drained a squad-most 84 three-pointers, generated an A-State career scoring average of 18.8 points to with 4.9 rebounds (284 rebs.) a game.
