MARTIN, Tenn.?Jim Jones' career night wasn't enough to help Arkansas State overcome second half foul trouble as the Indians fell to Tennessee-Martin in overtime, 80-77.
Jones pumped in 23 points on the night, but it was Dereke Tipler's 11 straight points in the last four minutes of the game that helped the Indians take the game to overtime.
For the second straight game ASU (1-3) let a 13 point second half lead slip away. But Tipler wouldn't let the Indians go without a fight as he scored ASU's final 11 points in regulation, the last one a 3-pointer from the wing with .2 seconds left in the second half. Tipler ended the game with 15 points.
From there, Skyhawk combo guard Jared Newson scored four of his game-high 27 points, the final jumper from the lane putting UTM (2-1) up five points with just 27 seconds left to play in overtime. The Skyhawks made enough free throws over the final few seconds to give UTM a rare win over the Indians.
Isaac Wells again had a solid night for the Indians by scoring 12 points and hauling down a team leading nine rebounds. But Wells was limited to just 12 minutes in the second half before fouling out after collecting four fouls in the half. Kitus Witherspoon came off the bench to score 13 points as the Indians pounded the ball inside on the Skyhawks.
UTM's leading scorer, Jeremy Kelly, displayed athletic ability but was harassed by Tipler most of the night into taking tough shots. Kelly finished with 16 points but hit just 5-of-16 from the field.
Neither team performed well from the free throw line. ASU connected on just 13-of-26 for a 50 percent clip while UTM found the going a little better, hitting 22-of-38 for 58 percent.
ASU leaves for the Colonial Classic hosted by Louisville. The Indians will face the Spiders of Richmond on December 3 at 2:30.
