SPRINGFIELD, MO ? The Arkansas State baseball team dropped its third straight game as the Indians were shutout for the first time this season as they fell to Missouri State, 14-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field. The loss drops the Tribe to 8-8 on the year while the Bears improve to 6-4 on the season. Missouri State starter Scott Carroll (2-1) turned in another strong Bear performance as he worked seven shutout innings as he only allowed four ASU hits. He also walked just one batter while posting six strikeouts on the afternoon. He combined with Jake Shafer for the first shutout of the Tribe since early in the 2005 season when ASU was held scoreless against 15th ranked Ole Miss. The Indians fell behind early as the Bears struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against ASU left-hander Joel Boeschen. Matt Lawson got things going with a single and moved into scoring position after advancing on a pickoff. Matt Weglarz drove in the first run of the game as he placed a run scoring single through the left side to plate Lawson. After Weglarz moved into scoring position on a bloop single, he came home to score on an errant Boeschen pickoff throw that sailed into right field to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Missouri State broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bears scored seven runs against the Tribe as they ran Boeschen from the game. The inning started out well for Boeschen who quickly got the first two outs courtesy of a double play. The next eight Missouri State batters reached base as the Bears notched five hits including three doubles that found holes in the Indian outfield and dropped in. The Bears broke the game open with a three-run home run home run by Shane Elanz that gave MSU a 9-0 lead. The game was delayed in the bottom of the sixth inning for 24 minutes due to storms in the area after Missouri State had plated three runs in the inning to take a 12-run lead. The Bears added two more run in the bottom of the seventh inning to go ahead, 14-0. Boeschen (1-2) worked just 3.2 innings in the loss as he was charged with nine runs, eight earned, as he allowed nine hits as he was a victim of some bloop hits by Missouri State. He also walked four batters while notching four strikeouts. Freshman Nicholas Lambert worked two innings as he was charged with three runs as he did not come back out to pitch after the rain delay. Michael Williams Jr. saw his first action on the hill after the rain delay and worked the final 2.1 innings as he allowed two runs on two hits. The Indians only mustered five hits in the loss to Missouri State with junior Tyler Doke picking up two hits in the loss. The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon as they meet up for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Hammons Field. The game will be broadcast on the flagship station of the Indian Radio Network 103.9 Earl FM and online at www.asuindians.com
