Richmond, Ky. (9/16/06) - The Arkansas State volleyball team posted a 2-1 record this weekend at the Eastern Kentucky Invitational, moving to 6-6 on the season.
The Lady Indians won their first match against IUPUI (3-11) 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-20). Arkansas State came out fighting, starting off the first game with a 5-0 run. The Lady Indians registered a .217 hitting percentage for the match.
Redshirt freshman Jessalyn Payne and junior Robin Aaron led the Lady Indians with 10 kills each. Aaron also added five blocks. Freshman Erin Neely recorded 13 digs, while junior Katie Peil had 36 assists.
“The team did a nice job all the way around,” head coach Craig Cummings said.
Arkansas State battled with host-team Eastern Kentucky (6-6) for two hours and 15 minutes to win their second match 3-2 (28-30, 30-26, 28-30, 30-26, 15-7). The Lady Indians recorded their highest hitting percentage of the tournament against the Colonels, hitting .261.
Senior Randilyne Volkmer and Payne both had double-doubles for the match, with Volkmer registering 23 kills and 17 digs and Payne managing 17 kills and 10 digs. Aaron had 18 kills and Neely recorded 18 digs.
In their third match, Arkansas State faced Belmont for the tournament championship. The Lady Indians fought hard for four games but could not hold on, dropping their final match 3-1 (23-30, 20-30, 30-27, 27-30).
“There just wasn't enough against Belmont,” Cummings said.
Volkmer recorded her second double-double of the tournament with 12 kills and 12 digs against the Bruins (11-2). Aaron added 11 kills, while Payne registered 12 kills. Peil had 45 assists and Neely added 13 digs. The Lady Indians managed a .167 hitting percentage for the match.
Volkmer and Aaron were named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Indians will take the short trip to Conway to face Mississippi Valley and Central Arkansas Wednesday before their home opener against Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas Friday at 7 p.m.
