JONESBORO (11-3-2007) ? Senior guard Adrian Banks scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Arkansas State Indians to a 95-59 victory over Lyon College in the season's first exhibition game Saturday night at the ASU Convocation Center.
Arkansas State took control early, building a 29-9 lead less than seven minutes into the game on 13-of-18 shooting from the field that included a 3-of-5 effort from behind the three-point arc. The Tribe led 43-24 at the break, getting eight points each from Adrian Banks and Yima Chia-Kur in the opening half.
“First, I really want to thank our crowd,” said ASU head coach Dickey Nutt. “I thought we had an outstanding crowd for an exhibition game. I was really pleased with our effort tonight. I think we are farther along than this time last year defensively, but a lot of that has to with depth. I think it's going to be a little different this year than in some of the year's past in that we have a great deal of depth and each player offers something a little different.”
Banks finished the night hitting 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from behind the three point line. Four other Indians scored in double figures as well, with ASU getting 14 points each from Shawn Morgan and Michael Lance, 12 from Chia-Kur and 11 from Jeremy Thomas.
Ryan Wedel added seven points for the Tribe, followed by P.J. Keaton with five, Ifeanyi Koggu with four, Larry Handy with three and Ashton Farmer with two points.
Banks and Thomas led the Indians on the boards with five each, and the Indians handed out 17 assists as a team against just eight turnovers.
Jonathan Donaldson led the Scots with 18 points.
The Indians will be back on the court Tuesday night when they host Hendrix College in the final exhibition game of the season, and will open the regular season at home Nov. 14 against Utah Valley State. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 7:05 p.m.
