JONESBORO, Ark.(10/12/08) ? Kristi Cocchiarella scored two goals for
the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to earn a 2-0 women's soccer victory over
Arkansas State in Sun Belt Conference action, Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
“We knew it was going to be difficult today, trying to
rebound from such an emotional and intense win on Friday, especially as good as
WKU is,” said head coach Derek Pittman.
The Red Wolves held Western Kentucky scoreless in the first
half, entering the locker room at halftime, 0-0.
“In the first half we were very organized defensively, we
moved as a unit and defended as a group, we tried to frustrate Western Kentucky
as much as possible,” said Pittman.
Cocchiarella scored the first goal of the match in the 47th
minute (46:42) off a cross from Megan Meinke from the left side, giving the
Hilltoppers the 1-0 advantage.
Cocchiarella then took a long free kick from Hayley Marsh,
which ricocheted off ASU goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus and Cocchiarella fired in
the second goal of the match in the 61st minute (60:31).
The Hilltoppers outshot ASU 19-9, taking 11 shots in the
first half. The Red Wolves took five shots on goal to WKU's six.
Freshman midfielder Michele Clark led the Red Wolves with
three shots, two of which were on goal. Meinke led all players with five shots
for Western Kentucky.
Stoltzfus made four saves in goal for the Red Wolves, facing
six shots on goal. Libby Stout made five saves in goal for Western Kentucky
facing five shots.
The Red Wolves continues action in a 4 p.m. match Oct. 17 at
Denver before traveling to North Texas for a 1 p.m. match on Oct. 19.
