ASU Soccer Returns To Road For Matches At Denver/North Texas

WHAT'S ON TAP:  The Red Wolves continue action in the SBC by traveling to league-leader Denver on Friday (Oct. 17) for a 4 p.m. match and then continue action on the road at North Texas on Sunday (Oct. 19) at 1 p.m.

THE TEAMS:  Arkansas State stands at 4-8-1, with an 1-4-1 mark in conference action. Freshman forward Kara Nitti leads ASU with six goals on the season, while freshman forward Sofia Turesson has five goals. Freshman forward Michele Clark and freshman goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus lead the squad with three assists each. Stoltzfus has played nine games in goal for the Red Wolves, making 41  saves with a 3-4-1 worksheet. She owns a 1.72 goals against average. Denver leads the league with a 12-1-2 record and own an undefeated 5-0-1 mark in conference play. Reining SBC player of the week Taryn Hemmings leads the Pioneers with 11 goals and five assists, while MacKenzie Snyder leads the league in goals against average with 0.53 anda 0.30 average in league play. Snyder has made 41 saves with a 11-1-2 record with six shutouts to her credit, including a league high three shutouts in conference competition. North Texas sits at 10-2-1 overall with a fourth-place 4-1-1 league mark. Kelsey Pearlman leads the Mean Green with eight goals and three assists. Mandy Hall has played all 13 games in goal for the North Texas making 37 saves with a 1.12 goals against average, she owns a 10-2-1 record with four shutouts on her worksheet.

ASU WINS FIRST CONFERENCE MATCH SINCE 2006:
With the 2-1 win over MTSU last Friday, ASU earned its first conference victory since beating Louisiana-Monroe in 2006. The conference win was also the first for head coach Derek Pittman. Prior to tying the match against ULM last Sunday, ASU had dropped 22-consecutive conference matches.

CLARK LEADS THE WAY: ASU freshman Michele Clark has stepped up big to lead the Red Wolves in scoring the last four games, netting two goals and an assist. Clark scored both goals against MTSU to lift the Red Wolves to victory.

THE SERIES VERSUS DENVER:
The Red Wolves have a 2-7 worksheet against Denver dating back to the programs inception in 2000. ASU won two straight against Denver in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

THE SERIES VERUS NORTH TEXAS: ASU has lost all 11 meetings with North Texas including three matches in the SBC Tournament dating back to the Red Wolves inaugural season in 2000.  

STACKING UP IN SBC STATS: Freshman forward Kara Nitti ranks first in the sun belt with 11 points, 2.75 points per game, five goals and 1.25 goals per game. Freshman forward Kai Gear ranks second in the Sun Belt with 10 points, 2.25 points per game, four goals and 1.0 goals per game, she also ranks seventh with 0.50 assists per game and tenth with 2.5 shots per game. Freshman forward Sofia Turesson ranks second in the league with 1.0 gooals per game, third with 2.0 points per game, fourth with one game winning goal, fifth with three goals and sixth with six total points. Sophomore forward Anna Kaloghirou leads the league with two game winning goals and ranks eighth with two total goals. Megan Stoltzfus ranks first in the league with three assists, and is seventh with a 4.50 saves per game mark. Freshman midfielder Elin Stavren-Eriksson ranks fourth in the league with two assists, and sixth with a 0.67 assists per game average.

ASU SNAPS SEVEN GAME SKID: With a 1-1 tie against Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 5 the Red Wolves snapped a seven-game losing streak. ASU beat its first three opponents of the season by a combined score of 15-4. Its combined score in the next seven games was 7-21.

YOUTH LEADS THE WAY: ASU's top four scorers are comprised of three freshman and a sophomore. Nitti  leads the way with six goals, while Turesson has five goals, which is more goals than any single player scored a year ago. Along with Nitti, freshman Kai Gear and sophomore Anna Kaloghirou have four goals. Kalghirou is ASU's top returning scorer, netting four goals in 2007. Freshman Michele Clark has also come on strong in the last few matches scoring two goals.
