DENVER, Colo. ? The Arkansas State women's soccer team
dropped a 2-0 Sun Belt Conference match to Denver, Friday. The Red Wolves fell
to 1-5-1 in the SBC and 4-9-1 overall. Denver continued unbeaten in the league
with a 6-0-1 record, and improved to 13-1-2 overall.
Taryn Hemmings scored both goals to lift the Pioneers to
victory, scoring on a header from six yards out to the corner of the net in the
fifth minute (4:59) and took a cross from Brooke Lamphere, one-timing the shot
for another goal in the 83rd minute (82:27).
“I have to give
credit to Denver they are an extremely good team and that is why they are number
one in the conference,” said ASU head coach Derek Pittman. “They are a very
good group. We played some very good soccer but we have to come out and give a
better effort as a whole.”
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus made a career-high nine
saves in goal for the Red Wolves. Seven of those saves came in the first half.
Freshman forward Kai Gear came off the bench to lead ASU
with three shots, two of which were on goal. Gear gave ASU their best scoring
chance on a last minute shot which Pioneers goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder had to
make a great save on to keep the clean sheet.
“We have to find a way to regroup ourselves for Sunday and
get a win. We have to put in the same kind of effort we have over the past four
or five games.”
Denver outshot the Red Wolves 23-8, taking 13 shots in the
first half.
Arkansas State continues SBC soccer action on Sunday when
they face North Texas at 1 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
