JONESBORO, Ark. (10/24/08) ? Although Arkansas State powered
back from a one-goal deficit twice in the match the Red Wolves soccer team
eventually succumbed to an overtime goal in the 96th minute (95:07)
by Florida Atlantic's Ashley Mannarino, falling to the visiting Owls, 3-2 in
overtime Friday.
With its two goals and two assists, the Red Wolves broke the
single season team scoring record by netting 81 total points so far this
season. The previous record was 80 points which was set by the 2003 team.
“I felt like our possession and our overall team attacking
was pretty good today. We deserved more from the game than what the result was,”
said ASU head coach Derek Pittman.
Laura Hyvonen connected on a cross by Gabriela DeVries on
the back post giving FAU the early, 1-0 lead in the fourth minute (3:09).
ASU's freshman forward Kai Gear teamed up with junior
defender Mary Geels to even the match in the 17th minute (16:45).
Geels sent a cross to Gear who one timed the goal into the upper crossbar. The
ball bounced off the bar and went into the back of the net out of reach of FAU
goalkeeper Jessica Badders.
FAU took the lead again in the 63rd minute
(62:01) on an ASU own goal.
Senior midfielder Bernadette Dierkier evened the match again
for the Red Wolves in the 75th minute (74:40) when she took a shot
in traffic off a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Lizzy Niles recorded an
assist on the play.
ASU and FAU each took a lot of shots in the match with the
Owls eeking out an advantage in the total shot count 17-16 over the Red
Wolves. Florida Atlantic took 12 shots
on goal to the Red Wolves 9.
“Our kids played hard and put in a great effort it was just unfortunate
for the game to finish the way it was. But
we will come back and play as hard as we did and look to get a win on Sunday,”
added Pittman.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus tied her career high with
nine saves in goal for the Red Wolves. Her counterpart, Badders, made seven
saves in goal for the Owls.
Dierker and Niles led the Red Wolves with three shots each,
while Mannarino led all players with five shots.
The Red Wolves complete their home schedule on Sunday with a
match against Florida International. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
