Late Rally Falls Short As ASU Drops SBC Soccer Match To Louisiana-Lafayette

JONESBORO, Ark. ? ASU's late rally fell short as the Red Wolves soccer team lost to Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-2, in Sun Belt Conference action Friday at the ASU Soccer Complex.

A goal by sophomore forward Anna Kaloghriou in the 87th minute (86:24) brought ASU within one goal, but time expired before the Red Wolves could tie the match. Kaloghriou took a pass from Bernadette Dierker and sent a shot from the left side of the box which found the back of the net.

“I was very proud of our girls for battling hard for the full 90 minutes and never giving up,” said ASU head coach Derek Pittman. “Unfortunately we made a few errors that they were able to capitalize on.”

The Ragin' Cajuns scored their first goal in the 15th minute (14:54) when Chelsea Balestra took a feed from Jordan Blevins and fired off a shot from the left side of the box.

Freshman forward Kara Nitti answered for the Red Wolves in the 34th minute (33:31) when she took a cross from defender Erin McKenna and scored the tying goal from the top of the box.

Heather Ulliman pushed Lafayette into the lead before halftime, 2-1, in the 44th minute (43:25) on a shot from the top of the box, delivered by Chelsi McHenry.

Callie Oliver scored the deciding goal for the Ragin' Cajuns from 18 yards out on a pass from Taunya Gellhoed in the 80th minute (79:34).

The Red Wolves outshot ULL, 14-10, with each squad taking eight shots on goal.

Kaloghriou led the Red Wolves with three shots, two of which were on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus made five saves in goal for ASU. Her counterpart Stephanie Weston made six for the Ragin' Cajuns.

“We will come back tomorrow and train and get ready for Monroe and try put in the same effort and hopefully come out on the winning end,” said Pittman.

The Red Wolves were in pink jerseys for the match in support of cancer research. ASU will play in pink again during Sunday's 1 p.m. match against Louisiana-Monroe at the ASU Soccer Complex. The game worn jerseys are up for auction with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the local affiliate of the Susan G. Koman foundation. To make a bid on the jerseys please contact the ASU Soccer office at 870-972-2340.
