MONROE, La. (11/2/08) ? The Arkansas State women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season with two flight championships at the ULM Invitational at Heard Stadium Saturday afternoon.

In flight one of singles play, Jenny Herring, won defeated teammate Paula Chelminska 6-3, 6-7 and 12-10.  Herring defeated Marjorie Ondeck from Memphis (7-6,6-4) and Anne Weijenborg of UALR (6-1,6-1) in her flight  to win the championship.  Chelminska, falling to her teammate, finished the First Flight in second place.

In flight two of singles play, Leydi Zora placed second, falling just short (6-3,6-4) against Claire Clark of ULM.  Zora defeated Sharon Makhanya of ULM (1-6,6-4,6-0) and De Rochefort of UALR (6-3,6-3) to get into the finals round of the tournament.  Rone Van Wyk took third place for her flight, defeating De Rochefort 6-1, 6-3.

In the third flight of singles play, Tina Ojdanic placed second on the weekend, loosing only once to conference opponent Marion Lehmann of ULM (6-2,0-6,6-3).  Ojdanic defeated Rebecca Van Den Houte of UALR (6-1,6-3) and Emestine Komhof of UTM (6-2,6-4).  Menna Kamal placed third in her flight defeating Van Den Houte of UALR (7-5,6-2) in her final match.

In doubles play, Van Wyk and Zora took home first place in their flight after defeating teammates Herring and Chelminska (8-4).  ASU's Van Wyk and Zora defeated teams from UALR (8-6) and UTM (8-5) in the first round to get into the championship round.  Herring and Chelminska defeated teams from UTM (8-5) and UALR (8-1) to get into the final round of the tournament.

In the second flight of doubles play Kamal and Ojdanic doubled up to win flight two of doubles.  They defeated University of Memphis (8-6) and UALR (9-7) in round robin play to go 2-0 on the weekend.

“I am proud of the way we competed,” said ASU Head Coach Marcia Williams after their final tournament.  “We were in the finals of every division we entered, and won the top flight in singles and in doubles, and won the second flight of doubles play.”
