Indians Pick Up 7-4 Victory Over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (3-26-2008) -  The Arkansas State Indians (14-10) belted 13 hits on the way to a 7-4 victory over the Memphis Tigers (11-12) Wednesday night at Nat Buring Stadium.  With the win, ASU snapped a four-game losing streak to the Tigers and avenged a 3-0 setback to Memphis March 11 in Jonesboro.

I thought it was one of the best performances of the year," said ASU Head Coach Keith Kessinger.  "This team can catch it and pitch it, and when we hit the ball we can be a very dangerous team."

The Indians made the most of their first at-bat, going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.  Center fielder Derrick Coleman reached on an error to lead off the game for Arkansas State, then crossed the plate for the 1-0 ASU lead when freshman first baseman Drew Benes delivered a two-out double to center field.

An RBI double down the left field line from Tiger shortstop Chad Zurcher tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, and Zurcher came home on a single from right fielder Trey Weidman for the 2-1 Memphis lead at the end of one.

Third baseman Guy Brown led off the second for the Indians with a triple that skipped just over first base.  Brown came home to tie the score at 2-2 when designated hitter Murray Watts bounced a double off of the right-center wall.  Watts put the Tribe back on top at 3-2 later in the inning when he came home on second baseman Brandon Eller's two-out single up the middle.

Indian starter Jett Jones retired eight batters in a row before Memphis center fielder K.K. Chalmers broke through for a one-out single in the fifth.  Chalmers advanced to third on an ASU throwing error, but Memphis could not get the run home when Zurcher delivered what the Tigers hoped would be a sacrifice to right field.  Arkansas State right fielder Aaron Ferguson threw out Chalmers at the plate to ruin the opportunity for the Tigers.

Arkansas State padded its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.  Watts led off the inning with a single, moved to second when Hoffman drew a walk, and advanced to third on a bunt single from Ferguson.  A sacrifice from Coleman scored Watts, and Hoffman scored the second run of the inning on a single from Eller.

Watts sent an RBI single into right center field in the seventh to add another run for Arkansas State, bumping the Indian lead to 6-2.

Memphis picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh after Indian reliever Chris Bullington struck out the side.  Bullington struck out Chalmers for the third out of the inning, but Chalmers reached on a dropped third strike and eventually scored on a single from Zurcher to cut the Arkansas State lead to 6-3.  Bullington then struck out Weidman for his fourth strikeout of the inning, but again the third strike got past ASU catcher Lawson Hipps, allowing Zurcher to come home and cut the Indian lead to 6-4.

The Indians re-gained some of their previously-earned breathing room in the eighth when Coleman got aboard with a bunt single before scoring on a base hit to right field from shortstop Ryan Hudgins to push the ASU lead to 7-4.

Bullington retired the side in the eight, notching two more strikeouts, and Indian closer Nick Lambert came on to earn the save in the ninth.

Jones (1-4) picked up the win on the mound, working six full innings while allowing two runs on five hits.  Jones walked three Tigers and struck out two.

Watts led the Indians at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's.

The Indians return to action Friday when they open a three-game series with South Alabama at Stanky Field in Mobile.
