CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (4-9-2008) ? Freshman Drew Benes went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI's to lead the Arkansas State Indians to an 8-3 victory over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks Wednesday night at Capaha Field.
With the win, ASU improved to 15-18 on the season while Southeast Missouri State dropped to 14-11.
Arkansas State took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Ryan Hudgins sent a two-out solo home run over the left field wall. The Redhawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from catcher Jim Klocke, but the Tribe went back on top with a run in the second before adding another in the fourth for the 3-1 lead.
Benes doubled to send home the run in the second before providing the 3-1 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.
The Redhawks scored a run in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Blake Slattery singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, but Benes came up big again in the sixth as the Tribe got the run back and more.
After left fielder Guy Brown got aboard with a single and right fielder Jett Jones doubled, Benes sent both home with his second double of the night to bump the ASU lead to 5-3. Benes crossed the plate on a Redhawk error, and the Indians stretched the lead to 7-3 later in the inning when second baseman Brandon Eller sent home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Southeast Missouri State cut the ASU lead to 7-3 in the seventh when left fielder Justin Wheeler drove in a run with an RBI single, but Benes doubled again in the eighth and eventually scored on a balk to lift the Indian lead to 8-3.
Junior Chase Ware (4-3) picked up the win on the mound for ASU, giving up three runs while scattering 10 hits in six innings of work. Corey Harness (0-1) took the loss for SEMO, giving up three runs on five hits in three innings of work.
