ASU Falls to Southern Miss, 6-3

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (4-13-2008) -  The Southern Miss Golden Eagles used a pair of first-inning home runs to take a quick 2-0 lead and went on to defeat Arkansas State 6-3 in game three of a non-conference series Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.  Southern Miss won the series 3-0 after winning 6-3 Friday and edging ASU 8-7 Saturday.

Center fielder Bo Davis led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run for the Eagles while designated hitter Trey Cuevas added a second solo shot later in the frame.  Neither team scored until Southern Miss used a pair of walked-in runs in the sixth to go up 4-0.

Arkansas State pulled to within a run with three runs in the seventh.  Third baseman Guy Brown led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a base hit from junior catcher Lawson Hipps.  Brown and Hipps advanced on a ground-out from freshman first baseman Drew Benes, and Brown scored the Tribe's first run on a single from pinch-hitter Cade Baxter.  Hipps came home on a sacrifice bunt from senior right fielder Aaron Ferguson to cut the Eagle lead in half, and senior A.J. Prickel, in to run for Baxter, scored when junior center fielder Derrick Coleman reached on a two-base error.

Southern Miss got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning.  Third baseman Chris Matesich singled to drive in the first run and second baseman James Ewing sent the other run home with a sacrifice fly to center field to push the Eagle lead to 6-3 at the end of seven.

USM closer Tyler Conn, the nation's saves leader, kept the Indians off the board in the eighth and ninth to seal the win for Southern Miss and earn his 12th save of the season.

Junior Jett Jones (1-5) took the loss for ASU, going five and two-thirds innings on the day.  Jones gave up four runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.  David Clark (3-4) went five innings to get the win for Southern Miss.  Clark did not give up a run on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Brown, Hipps and Ferguson all had two hits on the day to lead ASU at the plate, while Matesich led USM with three hits and an RBI.

The Indians will be back in action April 16 when they return to Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field in Jonesboro to host Murray State in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game.
