MIAMI, Fla. (10/25/09) – The Arkansas State soccer team scored two goals in the final 10-minutes of action, but fell just short of the lead falling to Florida International in Sun Belt Soccer action, 3-2, Sunday.
The Red Wolves fall to 6-9-1 with a 3-5-1 record in Sun Belt action while FIU improved to 10-5-3 with a 8-1-1 mark in league play.
After going down, 3-0, ASU got on the board off a Golden Panthers own goal in the 84th minute (83:42).
Freshman forward, Tory Pitts then moved the Red Wolves within one goal in the last five minutes when she scored from 10-yards outside the box off a feed from Tracy Powell moving the score to 3-2 in favor of FIU.
ASU was unable to net the equalizer before time expired.
Sophomore forward Michele Clark led ASU with four shots, taking two shots on goal. The Red Wolves outshot FIU 11-8, taking eight shots on goal to the Golden Panthers four.
FIU got on the board on a penalty kick from Thaisa Moreno at the 23:46 mark. Katrina Rose then sent a shot to the right post to take a 2-0 advantage for the Golden Panthers in the 41st minute (40:41).
FIU added another goal just after the halfway point (46:03) when Madeleine Hjorth-Stalgren finished a pass from Jessica Gambill inside the box.
With two matches remaining, ASU has the chance to make the conference tournament for the first time since the 2004 season. The Red Wolves are currently ranked in the top eight in the conference with only the 1-8 ranked teams in the conference standings receiving bids to the SBC Tournament.
ASU returns home for its final home contest of the season when they battle UALR on Friday at the ASU Soccer Park. Action against the Trojans is set to start at 3 p.m.
