ASU Soccer Defeats Western Kentucky In Shootout To Advance To Semifinals Of Sun Belt Conference Tournament For First Time In Program History

BOCA RATON, Fla. (11/4/09) – Arkansas State (8-9-3) battled for 110 minutes before firing off four consecutive penalty kicks to upset the No. 3-seeded Western Kentucky (14-4-2), 1-1, and advance to the Sun Belt Conference tournament semifinals for the first time in program history.

“We are absolutely ecstatic and very proud of our kids for sticking to our game plan and putting gin the effort that they did tonight to get the result against a great Western Kentucky team,” said ASU head coach Derek Pittman. “It was a total team effort, a number of kids stepped up and gave great performances tonight and without the entire team buying into our game plan there is no way that we would be able to pull off such a big win. Now our job is to find a way to recover and get our legs back and put in another good performance against Denver tomorrow night.”

Sophomore forward Michele Clark connected perfectly on a volley in mid-air sending the ball into the upper left post inside the box at the 17:19 mark to score ASU's lone goal of the match, taking the lead 1-0. Ashley McMurtry sent a corner kick, which was cleared directly back to her which she then sent to Clark for the score. The assist was McMurtry's eighth of the season.

Megan Meinke then scored an unassisted goal to tie things up for the Hilltoppers. She sent the ball just past the diving ASU freshman goalkeeper Susan Brown, rolling the ball into the net in the 26th minute (25:33).

With nine saves in the match, Brown set a record for single-season saves at Arkansas State (106).

The match continued without either team able to score the game-winner, ending the contest in a 1-1 tie.

Brown fired scored the first penalty kick, followed by Kara Nitti, Miranda Wiley and Lyndsey Patterson who all scored to close the door on the Hilltoppers.

Western Kentucky scored the second and third penalty kicks but missed the first and fourth.

ASU advances to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed Denver at 6 p.m. Thursday in Boca Raton, Fla.
