ASU Distance Performs Well As Red Wolves Track & Field Returned To Indoor Competition At SASF Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. (1/16/10) – The Arkansas State track and field teams returned to action after the Christmas Break at the SASF Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. on Friday and Saturday.

Action on Friday wrapped late with the women's pole vault competition where ASU finished three athletes in the top five with Stephanie Foreman, Cathryn Frappier and Erica Naeger all reaching 3.70.

Jesse Williams and Bryant Hankton both turned in solid performances in the weight throw finish 10th and 11th respectively. Hankton threw 16.4 and Williams tossed 15.89.

The highlight of the meet was the women's distance runners led by freshman Samantha Salinas who began with a personal record in the mile at 5:18.81 and led five top-10 finishers in the 3,000 meter run.

Salinas finished second in the 3K with a personal best of 10:39.06. ASU went second through fifth in the event with Reilly McAtee in third (10:39.27), Chelsea Weaver in fourth (10:39.28) and Sydney Foreman in fifth at 10:39.84 all of which were personal highs.

Soloman Williams had solid performances on the men's side with a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.29 and jumped a personal best for fifth place in the triple jump at 14.24.

Avery Taylor finished fourth in the triple jump at 14.26.

“We worked our kids pretty hard this week so it was really difficult for them to perform because they were tired. This meet is always an evaluation to se \e who is in shape and who worked out over Christmas break, and everyone passed,” said ASU head coach Lon Badeaux. “All the problems were technical stuff that is going to be cleaned up in the next few weeks. Overall it was a pretty good meet but we are going to get better.”

ASU hosts the ASU Invitational next Saturday and Sunday at the ASU Convocation Center.
