JONESBORO,
Ark. (10/1/10) - The Arkansas State soccer team battled hard but gave up two
late goals to fall to the visiting Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in Sun Belt
Conference action, 2-0 Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
ASU
matched WKU's output in shots with each squad taking 11, but were unable to get
any shots into the net.
ASU
fell to 4-7-1 on the season with a 0-4 mark in league play. WKU improved to 3-1
in the league with a 5-4-2 overall mark.
"We
just didn't finish our chances today," said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. "We
are doing everything else well; we just aren't finishing our chances. This is
now the second consecutive game where we create and create but just can't
finish."
Kara
Nitti led the ASU attack taking three shots while Mallory Outerbridge led WKU
with three shots, all of which were on goal.
WKU's
first goal came in the 78th minute (77:08) when Lindsay Williams
sent a free kick into the box from midfield. Sydney Sisler found the end of the
kick and sent the ball into the net across the front of the goal to the far
post.
Then,
in the 83rd minute (82:44) Mallory Outerbridge sent a shot from the
right side to the far post on a feed from Torrie Lange to put the Hiltoppers up
2-0.
ASU
had a balanced attack during the match taking five shots in the first half and
six in the second.
Junior
goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus made four saves in goal for the Red Wolves playing
the entire 90-minute contest. Libby Stout made three saves for WKU.
ASU
continues conference action next weekend when they travel to the Louisiana
schools. They face Louisiana-Lafayette at noon on Friday and ULM on Sunday at 1
p.m.
