Arkansas State Soccer Adds Five To 2010 Recruiting Class

JONESBORO (2/4/10) – The Arkansas State women's soccer program announced the signing of five student-athletes that will join the team in the fall of 2010, Thursday.
   
“Coach Ziyenge and I are very excited to welcome our 2010 recruits to the Red Wolves Family!  Alex Furr, Ashley Jackson, Bethany Kremer, Michelle Nichols, and Becca Wheeler form one of the strongest recruiting classes to come to Arkansas State University,” said ASU assistant coach Lisa Berg.  “As a group, they will bring athleticism and talent to the current program.  All the 2010 recruits have had playing experience at the highest national and regional levels and they will immediately contribute to the success that our program has already achieved.”

Four of the Red Wolves five signees come out of the state of Texas while the fifth hails from Colorado.

Alex Furr joins the Red Wolves after four successful seasons at Midlothian High School in Midlothian, Texas. A 5-8 midfielder, Furr earned first team all-district and all region honors while serving as team captain and led her team to Texas UIL State Regional Quarterfinals in 2008 and 2009. She most recently played club soccer with the Polaris '92 team which advanced to the 2009 Texas State Cup finals and was a member of the 2004-2008 '92 North Texas ODP State Team, attending the '92 ODP Region III Camp from 2004-07. When she arrives at ASU she will be a member of the Arkansas State Honors.

Ashley Jackson comes to ASU from Plano, Texas where she had four outstanding years for Plano West High School serving as captain for her team during her senior season. At 5-4 Jackson will play either midfield or defender for the Red Wolves after leading Plano West to the 2006-07 Texas state championship and a pair of all-region championships during her time there including being named second team all-district during her sophomore and junior years. Jackson played high school soccer with current ASU player Chelsea Fricke and club soccer with fellow signee Alex Furr. She played club soccer for the Solar Soccer Club for seven years which played in the Division I Lake Highlands Girls Classic League and participated in the USYS Region III Premier League. When Jackson is a member of the national Honor Society and will be a member of the ASU Honors College when she arrives on campus.

Bethany Kremer comes to ASU from Southlake, Texas where she served as varsity team captain and started at goalkeeper for three seasons for Keller High School. The 5-6 goalkeeper earned  District 5-5A honorable mention during her junior season advancing to the Bi-District Playoffs in 2007-08 and 08-09 while leading the team to the championship of the Nolan Showcase in 2008-09. Kremer played club soccer with fellow signee Alex Furr allowing no goals during the Lake Highlands Division I fall '09 season with Polaris Soccer Club and leading Polaris to the 2008-09 State Cup finals while getting to the State Cup quarterfinals in 07 and semifinals in 08. She will be a member of the Arkansas State Honors College when she arrives on campus

Michelle Nichols comes to Arkansas State after four years of varsity soccer at Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colo. earning first team all-league, all-state and all-Colorado honors. The 5-6 defender served as team captain and earned Most Valuable Player honors during her time at Ponderosa. Nichols won the state cup championship four times with her club team the Colorado Storm Academy Copa which reached the 2008-09 Region IV Quarter Finals and also won the 2009 Disney Showcase Championship and the 2009 Kick-It 3v3 U18 National Championship. The Storm will play in the Far West Region League during the 2010 season.

Becca Wheeler played four years of varsity soccer and served as team captain at Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas earning the Most Valuable Player award after the 2009 season and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2008. Wheeler stands at 5-7 and will likely play defender for the Red Wolves. She was named to the all-region team in 2008, all-district team all four years, named midfielder of the year in 2008 and Newcomer of the Year in 2007. She also served as team captain for her club team the '92 D'Feeters who played in the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League. Wheeler was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer players to watch list.
