JONESBORO, Ark.
(10/10/2011) — Following their performances in ASU's 24-14 Sun Belt Conference
victory Saturday at Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State senior safety Kelcie
McCray and junior defensive back Don Jones have earned Sun Belt Conference
Player of the Week honors.
McCray
(Columbus, Ga.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Jones (Town
Creek, Ala.) was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
McCray recorded two interceptions
against ULM to help the Red Wolves improve to 2-0 in SBC play with the win over
the Warhawks. His two interceptions were
a career high and tied for the second-most in the nation this season. He returned his second pickoff 51 yards to
set up what proved to be the winning touchdown.
He also had a pass breakup in the game, a tackle-for-loss and six
tackles. Saturday was the fourth time
this season he has posted five or more tackles in a game, and he is second
overall on the team with 38 stops on the year.
With ASU trailing late in the third
quarter, Jones sparked ASU to its second-half rally when he blocked a Warhawk
punt and returned it 25 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Jones' block and touchdown erased a
three-point deficit for the Red Wolves and gave ASU a 17-13 lead that it would
not relinquish. Jones also recorded a career-high
six tackles on defense which included one tackle-for-loss.
The Red
Wolves will return to action when they will host Florida International in a
nationally-televised Sun Belt Conference clash set for Oct. 18. Kickoff for the Tuesday night ESPN2 telecast
is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets for
ASU's four remaining home games are on sale and can be ordered by contacting
