Red Wolves Stave Off Ninth Inning Rally By SIU, Win 4-3

JONESBORO (3/1/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team used some solid pitching from starter Brad Allen and reliever Brandon Farley and staved off a ninth-inning comeback from Southern Illinois to pick up its third win on the season, 4-3 over the Salukis Tuesday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.

ASU improved to 3-6 while SIU fell to 2-6 with SIU reliever Peter Slavonic receiving the loss and ASU's Allen notching the win. Farley also got a save in the positive result for the Red Wolves.

“I thought we were a little more aggressive (today), I think it helped out a little bit, obviously we broke the ice,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “We had multiple runners on all day today again but we finally got some guys in, took the lead and had a big inning with four runs. Brad Allen was tremendous today. Great quality start seven innings with three runs or less so hats off to him. We got the W at the end so that is positive.”

The Salukis took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when second baseman Wes Neece doubled to lead off the inning and was plated on a sacrifice by left fielder Jordan Siversten.

ASU then took control of the game in the fifth inning scoring four runs to take a three-run advantage, 4-1. First baseman Jordan Castaldo singled up the middle to get on base and then advanced to second on single down the left-field line by designated hitter Michael George. Left fielder Ryan Emery then hit a bunt single to load the bases before catcher Tyler Smith singled through the left side to plate both Castaldo and George, giving ASU a 2-1 advantage.

Action continued in the fifth inning when Anthony Hecht hit fifth straight hit for the Red Wolves through the left side moving Smith to second and Emery to third. Shortstop Dustin Jones brought in Emery on a fielder's choice and Smith scored on a SAC fly out by Michael Faulkner, to give the Red Wolves a 4-1 advantage.

Allen pitched seven solid innings including pitching out of a jam in the fourth inning when two-runners were in scoring position with only one out. Allen struck out four while giving up just one unearned run on three hits. Farley then came in to pitch the final two innings striking out three and allowing two runs on two hits.

In the ninth SIU got a bit of a ate late rally going when first baseman Austin Montgomery was hit by the first pitch and was pushed to third on a double by DH Brock Harding.  They both scored when centerfielder Nick Johnson doubled to right field, getting within one run 4-3.

But Farley completed the save when he forced Brian Bajer into a pop-out and struck out right fielder Kollin Dowdy to end the inning and the game.

Emery and George led ASU at the plate with two hits while Smith drove in two runs.

The Red Wolves continue action on Wednesday when they travel to Murray State for a 2 p.m. rematch with the Thoroughbreds.
