ASU Captures Series Win With 6-1 Victory Over Austin Peay

JONESBORO (3/12/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team picked up a 6-1 win over Austin Peay and solidified its first series win of the season Saturday night at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.

The Red Wolves reached.500 for the first time this season moving to 8-8 overall while APSU fell to 7-6 on the year.

The game was held scoreless on both sides through five innings but The Governors were the first to strike when they Jordan Hankins doubled down the left field line driving in Reed Harper.

But ASU answered back in the seventh and eighth scoring six runs over the two innings. The Red Wolves took the lead when Zach Maggio singled to drive in two runs in the seventh.

“We had the opportunity to get a big two-out hit, a lot of times those are golden,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “In the long run those are things that are hard to come by sometimes. But we got one and got two RBIs out of it and that really jump started us in the dugout.”

The following inning, ASU batted around scoring four unanswered runs to set the final 6-1 score. Logan Uxa doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on the throw to score Jordan Castaldo. Uxa then scored on a wild pitch before Ryan Emery hit a solo home run, his first of the year, to give ASU a 5-1 advantage. Dustin Jones then singled to bring home Anthony Hecht wrapping up the inning.

Maggio and Hecht each went 2-3 to lead ASU. Castaldo did not record a hit, ending the second-longest hitting streak in school history at 24 games.

Jacob Lee took the win for ASU pitching 7.1 innings allowing just one run on six hits while striking out seven. Jack Snodgrass took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five Red Wolves hits.

ASU continues its series with APSU on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
