ASU Baseball Picks Up 6-5 Win Over Missouri State

JONESBORO (3/9/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team used a big third inning to take a 6-2 lead which it never relinquished taking a 6-5 win over Missouri State in nonconference midweek action Wednesday at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.

ASU ended a seven-game winning streak for Missouri State (8-4) and improved to 6-8 on the season.

Missouri State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kevin Medrano hit an RBI single and Brock Chaffin drove in Spiker Helms on a ground-out to second base.

ASU answered in the bottom of the first scoring when Jose Castaldo singled up the middle to plate Michael Faulkner. The Red Wolves tied it up when Ryan Emery scored on a ground out by Taylor Smith, knotting the game at 2-2.

ASU broke open its scoring in the third inning. Zach Maggio reached on an error to lead off the inning. Faulkner and Baumgartner each walked to load the bases. Castaldo then was hit by a pitch which scored Maggio. Michael George then plated Falkner when he grounded out to first base. Ryan Emery was then hit by a pitch which reloaded the bases. Anthony Hecht then singled to bring in Baumgartner and Smtih singled to score Castaldo taking a 6-2 lead.

“We had some guys come through with some big hits with the bases loaded to score the fifth and sixth runs and still this is an evolving offense this is going to be an offense that is going to be a work in progress all year long,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “It's different from what we had last year because we have some new guys in the lineup that have not seen division I pitching. Fortunately we have some older guys in the lineup that can help us, but I don't think we have hit on all cylinders yet. I don't think we have really shown what we could do, we have got to keep working.”

Missouri State then scored one run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to get within one run, 6-5. ASU then brought in reliever Cory Kyle who pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit against 10 batters to pick up his second straight save.

Sam Jew picked up the win pitching the second and third inning for the Red Wolves, his first of the season, while Clay Murphy fell to 1-2 on the season taking the loss for the Bears.

Hecht led ASU going 2-3 from the plate while Castaldo extended his hitting streak to 23-games leading ASU with two RBI.

Missouri State outhit ASU with eight hits but stranded 10 runners on base and committed one error. ASU was perfect in the field with seven hits and left six on base.

The Red Wolves host Austin Peay this weekend for a three-game series. First pitch Friday is at 6 p.m.
