ASU Soccer Lends Helping Hand At Special Olympics

JONESBORO, Ark. (4/11/11) – Around 250 Special Olympians participated in the Area seven track and field competition held at the ASU track facility last Friday. Standing by their side to lend a helping hand was the ASU women's Soccer team who served as athlete escorts for the event.

The event, which included athletes who will go on to compete in the State Special Olympics track and field competition, allowed the athletes to engage in social opportunities and encourages the building of character. It also allowed the Red Wolves to do something they enjoy; reaching out and connecting with the community.

As Athlete Escorts, the Red Wolves helped the athletes from the staging area to their events and also accompanied them to the podium to receive their medals.

“The courage and determination shown by the Special Olympians was very motivational and an eye opening experience for our players,” said Head Coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge, “We are all looking forward to working this event again next year.”

The Red Wolves close out their spring schedule with a home match against St. Louis University at 2:00 pm, April 16.
