MOBILE, Ala. (4/21/11) - The fifth-seeded Arkansas State women's tennis team (10-6) swept No. 12 Western Kentucky (13-7) 4-0 Thursday morning in first round action of the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Mobile, Ala.
Freshman Emily Crowe and sophomore Ioana Teu picked up an 8-3 win over WKU's McKinley Mason and Monta Reinfelde at the No. 1 doubles spot, and seniors Jenny Herring and Menna Kamal secured the doubles point for ASU with an 8-2 victory over the Hilltopper doubles team of Megan Stephens and Carrie True at No. 3.
Freshman All-SBC selection Biljana Miloshevska defeated True in singles action 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 for A-State's second point of the day. Kamal's victory over Morgan Freeman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 gave the Red Wolves a 3-0 lead, before Herring claimed the win, topping Katrina Vucina 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Freshman Janie Nowland downed Mason 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, and Teu finished her singles match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex Crofford at No. 5. The remaining singles matches were unfinished.
"The doubles were not our best but the girls played singles well," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams. "We are looking forward to playing North Texas tomorrow although we know it will be a tough match."
Arkansas State will now face the No. 4 seed North Texas at the Mobile Tennis Center Friday at 9:00 a.m.
