Ferguson Strikes Out 14 To Lead ASU Past MTSU

JONESBORO, Ark., (4/29/11) – Senior right-hander Andy Ferguson struck out a league-high 14 batters in the Arkansas State baseball team's 6-5 win over Middle Tennessee Friday night in the Sun Belt Conference series opener.

Ferguson (5-2) pitched only the second complete-game win of the season for the Red Wolves who improved to 20-24 on the year with a 7-11 league mark. The Blue Raiders fell to 15-27 with a 7-12 Sun Belt ledger.

“Andy was fantastic tonight,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “He had one pitch left up to one of the top home run hitters in the Sun Belt and got he got the ball up and out and put us a little behind, but credit to him and what he did. He wanted the game and he got it done. We have to keep working, this is a good ball club we are facing, they're well coached. Tomorrow is a different day and we just have to get after it.”

Senior Jordan Castaldo got ASU on the board in the first inning when he singled-home sophomore Zach Maggio who had walked and reached third on a pair of wild pitches, giving the Red Wolves an early 1-0 advantage.

ASU stretched its lead to two runs when Maggio hit into a fielder's choice, which plated Zach George in the second inning and out to three runs when Castaldo hit a solo-home run to right field in the fifth inning.

Middle Tennessee took its only lead of the game when right fielder Will Skinner hit a grand-slam home run with two outs in the top of the fifth. ASU retook the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the frame when Maggio and Emery were walked with the bases loaded.

The Red Wolves added an insurance run when George doubled-home Tyler Smith in the seventh. The Blue Raiders were able to score one run in the ninth on and sac-fly by LaRue but Ferguson knocked down Jay Morris for his 14th strikeout of the game and the win.

Castaldo and George led ASU at the plate each going 2-3. Castaldo had two RBI and a run scored while George had two runs scored and an RBI. ASU outhit MTSU 7-6 while each team recorded one error.

The Red Wolves will complete their SBC series against the Blue Raiders in a double-header scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
