ASU Wins Series Opener At ULM, Snaps Seven-Game Skid

MONROE, La. (4/8/11) – The Arkansas State baseball used big seventh and eighth innings to break open the contest scoring 10 runs over the two frames to take a 13-2 win over host ULM in the opening contest of their Sun Belt Conference series Friday night at Warhawk Field.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Red Wolves who improved to 13-19 with a 3-7 mark in Sun Belt Conference play. The loss dropped ULM to 16-12 with a 4-6 record in league action.

ASU got on the board in the first inning when Michael Faulkner singled up the middle to lead off the game. Zach Maggio then doubled-home Faulkner before being singled-home by Todd Baumgartner.

It was a classic pitchers' duel through the opening frames as ULM scored in the third and ASU retook a two-run lead in the sixth on a Logan Uxa RBI sacrifice. ULM got back within one run in the bottom of the sixth when Joey Rapp hit an RBI single.

ASU broke open the game in the seventh scoring six runs on six hits to take a 9-2 lead. Dustin Jones, Faulkner and Maggio each singled to lead off the inning before Emery cleared the bases on a three-RBI double to left-center. Jordan Castaldo then doubled-in Emery before Tyler Smith hit his first home run of the season to bring in Castaldo over the left field fence.

Baumgartner's two-out three RBI home run in the eighth put ASU up 12-2. Smith then singled-home Castaldo to round out the four run inning for the Red Wolves which pushed ASU to a season-high 13 runs scored.

“Well a humid night and probably the warmest we have had and honestly I think it affected both starting pitchers, but he gutted it out and got the pitch when he needed to, we got the out when we needed to and we got the hit when we needed to,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “It's fun to see some guys get excited and obviously still hungry to go.”

Andy Ferguson gave up just two runs in seven innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the year, starting on the hill for the Red Wolves. Drew Granier took the loss for ULM falling to 3-2 giving up eight runs, all earned on nine hits to the Red Wolves.

Baumgartner led the Red Wolves going 3-5 at the plate with four RBI and was followed by Emery who was 2-4 with three RBI and three runs scored and Smith who was 2-5 with three RBI.

ASU outhit ULM 14-8 and turned in a clean sheet in the field while ULM had two errors. Cesario and Clowers led ULM each going 2-4 at the plate.

ASU and ULM continue their Sun Belt series on Saturday with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Warhawk Field.
