Ferguson Pitches Complete Shutout To Lead A-State To Sun Belt Tourney Victory

MONROE, La., (5/27/11) – Arkansas State senior Andy Ferguson pitched a complete-game shutout striking out 11 batters to lead the Red Wolves baseball team to a 3-0 win over Louisiana-Lafayette at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Friday.

It was the second complete-game victory for Ferguson, as the Red Wolves improved to 26-31-1 while Louisiana-Lafayette was mathematically eliminated from the tournament falling to 31-26 on the year.

“Well I think the day is all about Andy Ferguson on the mound and what a tremendous performance to throw a four-hit shutout at 11 o'clock in the morning,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “Just a tremendous effort on his part, he was well prepared and was in the strike zone early and often and was out of it when he wanted to. Everything that you want a senior to do on one of the final outings of his career, I am just so proud of what he did.”

The game was scoreless through four and a half innings until Michael Faulkner tripled down the right field line and then scored on a wild pitch to give ASU a 1-0 lead.

ASU extended its lead to 2-0 in the sixth when Todd Baumgartner singled to lead off the inning and was driven in when Zach George hit a two-out double.

In the eighth inning, ULL loaded the bases and then walked ASU's Tyler Smith, plating Ryan Emery who had led the inning off with a single to give the Red Wolves a 3-0 lead.

“The bottom line today was that it was an elimination game,” added Raffo. “The team that lost was out, we knew that as a club and we wanted to force the issue and pass it on and see whatever happens through the rest of the tournament. We are looking forward to playing tomorrow.”

Ferguson gave up just four hits to the Ragin' Cajuns including holding ULL hitless for the final three innings improving to 7-4 on the year.

Sophomore Zach Maggio led ASU at the plate going 2-4 while Faulkner, Emery, Baumgartner, George and Dustin Jones also had hits for A-State.

The Red Wolves will continue action at the Sun Belt Tournament on Saturday facing South Alabama at 3 p.m. in their final group game of the tournament.
