ASU Soccer Opens Season With 1-1 Tie At Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn., (8/17/11) – The Arkansas State women's soccer team opened regular season-action with a 1-1 tie at Lipscomb Friday night.

The Red Wolves gave up an early goal in the fifth minute (4:40) when Lipscomb's Meghan McGuire converted a penalty kick.

Freshman forward Jessica Jingblad scored her first collegiate goal and tied the game for the Red Wolves at 1-1 on a feed from Ashley McMurtry in the 28th minute (27:35).

The game continued through the final frames and through overtime remaining scoreless. Jingblad, along with Megan Mace and Tory Pitts led ASU with two shots. Kameron Stillwell led Lipscomb with four shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kremer made four saves in goal facing 15 shots, including five which were on frame. The Red Wolves had 10 shots, including six shots on goal.

“We were a bit unsettled by the early goal but slowly found our rhythm as the game progressed. The girls fought to the end against a vastly improved opponent,” said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. “Bethany Kremer in particular was the best player on the field.”

ASU opens its home slate on Sunday facing Mississippi State at 2 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
