ASU Soccer Picks Up Shutout Win In League Opener Over FAU

JONESBORO, Ark. (9/23/11) – The Arkansas State women's soccer team won its Sun Belt Conference opener, 3-0 over Florida Atlantic Friday at the ASU Soccer Complex.

The conference opening win was just the third in ASU Soccer history as the Red Wolves improved to 3-4-2 and FAU fell to 4-4 on the season.

“I am really pleased that we beat such a quality team. This is a well coached team, it's a good team and it's really nice to see my girls stepping up after four disappointing losses and beating a good team like this,” said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. “The goal for us today was to outshoot them, but also to get our shots on frame. We haven't had too much problem scoring, the problem has been scoring early and today we were able to overcome that.”

ASU got its first goal just 2:23 into the game when Ashley McMurtry connected with Jessica Jingblad who headed the cross over the head of the goalkeeper.

In the 26th minute (25:41), Michele Clark scored an unassisted goal off a deflection to the near post to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead.

Kara Nitti took a feed from Clark and sent the ball into the open net after a volley inside the box in the 70th minute (69:52) giving A-State a comfortable 3-0 lead.

ASU outshot FAU 17-8 including a margin of 11-4 in shots on goal. FAU was unable to finish any chances but were whistled offsides nine times to the Red Wolves four.

McMurtry and Jingblad each recorded three shots to lead the Red Wolves while Aja Aguirre played 84:25 in goal for A-State with four saves. Megan Stoltzfus came in for the first time since an injury early in the season to finish up the shutout playing 5:35 in goal for the Red Wolves.

Lindsey Rick had three shots for FAU while Ashley Lantes played 74:12 in goal for the Owls recording six saves.

ASU continues Sun Belt Conference action by hosting Florida International at the ASU Soccer Complex on Sunday. Kickoff against the Golden Panther s is set for 1 p.m.
