JONESBORO, Ark. (9/25/11) – Florida International scored with just 53-seconds remaining in the first overtime period to take a 2-1 advantage from the ASU Soccer team Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The loss drops ASU to 3-5-1 on the season with a 1-1 league mark while FIU improves to 5-5 overall with a 2-0 Sun Belt Conference ledger.
“We did a good job of fighting back against one of the top teams in the conference,” said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. “Having said that what we wanted was a win and we didn't get it but we are going to stay positive and look forward to playing against MTSU.”
FIU scored first in the 39th minute (38:38) when Nicole DiPerna took a feed from Kelly Hutchinson on a shot from the top of the box to the left side of the net, taking a 1-0 lead for the Golden Panthers.
ASU went into the locker room with trailing 1-0 at the half, but Jessica Jingblad scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute (60:01). Jingblad shot the ball from the top of the box to the far post to even the match for ASU, 1-1.
FIU's Ashleigh Shim connected with April Perry who ricocheted the winning goal off the cross bar with just seconds remaining in the first overtime period, to take the win for the Golden Panthers.
FIU outshot A-State 18-7 and had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. ASU goalkeeper Aja Aguirre made nine saves in goal for the Red Wolves, a career-high.
ASU was never whistled for offsides in the contest but FIU was whistled for nine infringements.
The Red Wolves hit the road to continue their Sun Belt Conference slate next weekend. ASU travels to Middle Tennessee for a match on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Blue Raiders.
