EVANSVILLE, Ind. (2/17/2012) — The Arkansas
State women's tennis team defeated Evansville 5-2 Friday night at the Tri-State
Athletics Club.
Freshman Tamara Slijepcevic remained
undefeated on the year in singles competition with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over
Aleks Dzakula in the No. 2 singles match. Slijepcevic is now 5-0 on the year in
singles matches.
ASU (3-2) freshman Mariana Rong earned a
point for ASU by defeating Dora Kotsiou 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match,
while Biljana Miloshevska defeated Emily Richardson 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 4
match. Ioana Teu earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mina Milovic in the No. 5 match, while Ceara Howey defeated
Gaby Fifer 6-0, 6-4 in then No. 6 singles match.
Natasha James picked up Evansville's only
singles point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Janie Nowland in the No. 3 singles
match.
“It is always good to get a win on the road,”
ASU tennis coach Marina Engelbrecht said. “Hopefully the momentum will carry
over to Sunday against Murray State.”
The Red Wolves got off to a slow start in the
doubles competition after losing all three matches to give Evansville the
doubles point. Kotiou and James defeated Teu and Rong 8-3 in the No.1 doubles
match, while Kelsey Costales and Richardson defeated Nowland and Miloshevska
9-8 in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 match Jessica Raatz and Dzakula defeated
Jess Heeps-Eriksen and Slijepcevic 8-4.
A-State will return the courts Sunday, Feb.
19 in Murray, Ky., to take on Murray State at noon.
