HOUSTON, Texas (8/24/12) – The Arkansas State volleyball
team suffered a 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 loss to Brigham Young to open the 2012
volleyball season at the Rice Invitational on Friday.
The Red Wolves (0-1) held an early 6-5 advantage in the first set,
but struggled to find an answer for the Cougars' attacking game as BYU pulled
away for a 25-14 victory. BYU jumped out to a 10-3 edge in the second set that A-State
could not overcome and came away with a 25-15 victory and 2-0 lead in the
match. In the third set the Cougars again took advantage of A-State miscues and
won 25-12 to sweep the match.
“We're having to learn on the job right now because we have had a
rash of injuries that have limited practice,” ASU volleyball coach David Rehr
said. “Being able to get people back on the court promptly is helpful, but the
continuity is not there and we've got to be able to pick that up.”
Kelsie Hodges led ASU with eight kills, while Taylor Szypulski
added seven and Jasmine Terry finished with five. Allison Kearney had a
team-high 20 assists, while Szypulski added eight digs. Amanda Chaparro and
Megan Baska finished with six digs each.
ASU will return to the court Saturday, Aug. 25 for a match against
Rice at 12:30 p.m. and against Air Force at 7 p.m.
