JONESBORO,
Ark. (9/2/12) – The Arkansas State soccer team set a new school record for most
shots in a single-game in a 4-0 victory over Jackson State in a non-conference
soccer match on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The
Red Wolves (3-2) took 43 shots, breaking the previous mark of 33 shots in a
game was set in a match against Alabama State in 2000.
“At
the end of the day we got the victory and that is all we wanted,” ASU soccer
coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge said. “Give credit to Jackson State because they were
able to frustrate us a little bit, but my ultimately my girls came back in the
second half and put up a really good fight.”
A-State
needed just four minutes to take a lead they would never relinquish in the
match. Sophomore Christina Fink scored her second goal of the year when she put
the ball into the back of net when the ball bounced off the Jackson State
goalkeeper and Fink put the ball into a wide open right side of the net.
ASU
scored again in the 60th minute when Jena' Kelley took a pass from
Kristina Rivera and scored over the outstretched reach of the goalkeeper to
give the Red Wolves a 2-0 edge. It was Kelley's third goal of the year, while
Rivera earned her first assist.
Logan
Kramer scored for A-Strate in the 77th minute on pass from Ashley
McMurtry at the top of the box, and Rivera scored her first goal of the season
in 84th minute when McMurtry picked up her second assistant of the
game when she fed the ball into Rivera on the right side of the box.
ASU
outshot Jackson State 43-5 in the game, including taking 23 shots in the first
half. ASU was also awarded 10 corner kicks.
Aja
Aguirre played 82 minutes in goal for A-State to earn the victory, while Amanda
Lee played the final seven minutes.
ASU
will return to the field for pair of home matches against UT-Martin Sept. 7 and
Central Arkansas Sept. 9. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.
