GREEN, Ky. (9/21/12) – The Arkansas State soccer team opened Sun Belt
Conference play with a 2-0 loss to Western Kentucky on Friday night.
The
Hilltoppers (6-3-0) scored goals in the 52nd and 62nd
minutes to build a 2-0 advantage that the Red Wolves (6-4-0)could not recover
from. Western Kentucky outshot ASU 18-9 in the match and had a 10-6 edge in
shots on goal.
“We
lost to a squad that is much more polished overall than they were last season,”
ASU soccer coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge said. “The girls put up a good fight, but
this just wasn't our day.”
Christina
Fink and Mallory McGilvray paced ASU with two shots each in the match, while
Christine Giles, Loren Mitchell, Katey Carmichael and Jena Kelley' each also
took shots. McGilvray also led the team with two shots on goal.
Aja
Aguirre earned the start in goal in for ASU and made six saves.
ASU
will return to the action on Sunday, Sept. 23 for a match in Murfreesboro,
Tenn., against Middle Tennessee.
