A-State Soccer Rallies Late; Falls to Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. (10/5/14) –  The Arkansas State women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals but it was not enough as the Red Wolves dropped a 5-2 decision to Georgia State Sunday afternoon at the Georgia State Soccer Complex.

The Panthers jumped out in in front with three first half goals, but the A-State battled to within a goal after the first 10 minutes of play in the second half. Ava Abner connected on her third goal of the season in the 50th minute after collecting a deflection in front of the net and sending it by the goalkeeper to get the Red Wolves within 3-1.

The ball was sent in to the box by Lauren Crimi and deflected off Jordan Adams before Abner was able to control and put the Red Wolves on the scoreboard. Abner, a sophomore from Fort Thomas, Ky., now leads Arkansas State with three goals on the year.

A-State (3-10, 0-4 Sun Belt Conference) pulled within one goal five minutes later on a long-strike by Tayler Carter in the 55th minute. Carter scored from 30-yards out with a perfect strike in the top corner that was just out of the reach of Panthers goalkeeper Christa Fox to get A-State within 3-2.

Mykel Ward missed an opportunity to tie the game in the 74th minute when her header sailed high. Carter also had a corner kick in the 76th minute, but the Red Wolves were not able to take advantage of the opportunity.

Georgia State (4-6-4, 2-1-1) padded its lead in the in the 82nd minute when Rebecca Copeland scored on an assist from Whitney Raven and then the Panthers made it a three goal advantage in the 85th minute on Raven's second goal of the game.

Lee replaced Sara Wicks in goal at halftime and made two saves. Loren Mitchell led the Red Wolves with four shots, two on goal, while Crimi also took a pair of shots. Carter, Brianna Williams and Abner all had one shot land on goal, while Ward and Jenna Duerst added one shot apiece.

Lauren Harriman scored the first goal of the game for Georgia State in the 10th minute when Wicks attempted to punch the ball away but instead had it land in front of Harriman who put it by Wicks from 10-yards out. Raven's first goal of the came in the 18th minute that put one by Wicks in the bottom left corner. Suzanne Arafa had the third goal of the half in the 42nd minute.

A-State returns to Sun Belt Conference action on the road Sunday, Oct. 10 at Louisiana-Monroe.
