LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (5/16/14) – The Arkansas State baseball suffered a 4-2 setback against Arkansas-Little Rock Friday night in the second of a three-game series against the Trojans at Gary Hogan Field.
With the loss, Arkansas State fell to 29-25 overall and 17-12 in conference play. UALR improved to 25-28 overall and 9-20 in league play.
A-State took an early lead for the second straight day but like the series opener, the Red Wolves were unable to hold on to the advantage.
Lucas Feddersen drove in Arkansas State's only run of the game with a bases loaded walk in the top of the first inning.
UALR pitcher Sam Thoele loaded the bases after a walk to Zach Maggio and Austin Baker followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Stuart Levy was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Feddersen drew the walk to drive in the game's first run.
A-State look poised to break the game open, but failed to push across another run and left the bases loaded.
Thoele settled down after the first inning and limited the Red Wolves to just three base runners over the next six-plus innings.
Bradley Wallace matched Thoele and did not allow a hit in the first two innings. He ran into trouble in the third however and gave up four runs on five singles in the inning.
Austin Pfeiffer started the rally with an RBI single and Ben Crumpton drove in a pair with an infield single. Tanner Rockwell finished the inning with a run scoring through the left side to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.
Cody Woodhouse came in to relieve to Wallace and turned in four shutout innings. Five of the first six out he recorded were fly ball outs.
He ran into trouble in the seventh when he put two runners on and then was called for a balk to move the runners into scoring position but got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to keep the game at a 3-run deficit.
Austin Baker drove in a run in the eighth with a 2-out, RBI double and Matt Burgess followed with a walk but both runners were stranded to end the rally.
