Ponder Named SBC Defensive Player of the Week

JONESBORO, Ark. (9/5/17) – Arkansas State junior goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Red Wolves to a perfect 2-0 record over the weekend.

Ponder earned the start in goal on Friday as the Red Wolves hosted Oral Roberts at the A-State Soccer Park and stopped 11 shots in the 3-0 victory. The 11 saves are tied for the sixth most in school history, seven of which came in the second-half and she helped protect a two-goal lead before the squad added a third goal.

The St. Louis, Mo., native now stands at 2-1-0 on the season and has made 18 saves with one shutout. She has moved into fourth on the school's all-time career saves list with 179 for her career and currently has the best career goals-against average of any Red Wolves' goalkeeper at 1.37.

This is Ponder's second-career Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week award.

The Red Wolves return to the field for their final non-conference match Friday, Sept. 8 at UT Martin. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
