A-State Baseball Welcomes Missouri State in Weekend Series

History in The Making.

A-State trails the all-time series with Missouri State with the team posting a 23- 41 mark against the Bears. The series began in the 1964 season opener with the Red Wolves winning 5-3 and A-State won the first three games with scores of 16-3 and 3-2 represting the other time finals. Missouri State got on the in the last of four matchups during the 1964 season with a 2-0 win over Arkansas State. The two teams didn't play again until a couple of meetings in the 1982 season, both 4-2 losses by A-State. The series resumed in 1990 with four more losses by the Red Wolves and the two teams have played every season since then except for 1998. A-State's best run in the series was from 1994-97 with a 7-3 record against the Bears, including a 3-0 mark in 1994. This will be just the third three-game weekend series the two teams have played. The first was in Jonesboro in 2003 and the second was in 2006 in Springfield. A-State is 2-4 in those games with both wins coming in the final game of each series. Head coach Tommy Raffo is 4-12 against Missouri State. A-State lost both games in his first season before winning one of two in 2010. The Red Wolves won the only meeting in 2011 after the first game was rained out in Jonesboro. Missouri State swept two games in 2012 before A-State split in two games with a 7-5 win in the second game of 2013 to mark its last win in the series. The Red Wolves are on a four-game losing streak. The two teams were supposed to play two games in Jonesboro in 2015.

The Last Meeting:

Last season the two squads met in a three-game weekend series in Springfield, Mo., The Bears defeated the Red Wolves two games to one. In game one, Missouri State won 12-4 on two Ben Whetstone homeruns while Matt Brown helped the Bears score seven runs from the second through fourth innings. Carter Hold tosses two innings and only allowed one run, while Korey Wasson tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth. In game two, the Red Wolves tool a 4-1 win over Missouri State. Coulton Lee had a career-high seven strikeouts, while Jesse Kutzke retired all six batter he faced. However, in game three Missouri State beat the Red Wolves 5-4 on a walk- off sacrifice fly. Missouri State is entering the weekend 3-7 and coming off a series sweep over UCA. The Bears beat UCA 9-7 in game one and earned a 15-3 victory the follow-ing day to complete the series sweep.

The Sky is the Limit:

Sky-Lar Culver is leading A-State in multiple stat categories including Avg. (.378), hits (17), RBIs (15) and Total Bases (30) ... Culver also has the highest OBP (.453) for the Red Wolves. In Sun Belt. Culver is in fourth with total RBIs and tied for second in doubles with 7. Culver's .378 batting percentage is good for ninth in the league while his .667 slugging percentage is good for third in the SBC. The Mountain Home native's seven doubles places him in a tie for first in the SBC while he is tied ninth in the league with 17 hits.
