FOLEY, Ala. (11/6/20) –
Olivia Smith scored the lone goal to lead the Arkansas State Women's soccer team past Georgia State 1-0, advancing to the Sun Belt Conference finals for the second consecutive year.
Following the win, the Red Wolves improved to a respectable 10-1-1 (8-0-1) on the year. The shutout over the panthers marks the tenth shutout of the 2020 campaign for A-State.
In the 33rd minute,
Haley Husted sent a beautiful corner kick just inches in front of the net, which found the head of
Julianna Coates. Coates then headed the ball towards the feet of Smith. Smith then gathered and launched the ball, but it was deflecting off a Georgia State defender. Smith was able to control the deflection and send the ball through the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Red Wolves a 1-0 advantage.
Arkansas State has outshot its opponents for 12-straight contests, holding an 11-7 advantage over the Panthers (10-3-2). The Red Wolves placed nine shots on target compared to Georgia State's 2. A-State earned to corners in the match.
Smith,
Darby Stotts, and
Tara Lea each took two shots in the contest while
Sarah Sodoma,
Hailey Furio,
Abigail Miller, Abby Glockzin, and
Hannah Maupin each took one.
Megan McClure made two saves in the contest as she registered her ninth shutout of the season. McClure has now taken over the number 1 spot in most career wins in program history (22).
A-State will return to action Sunday, Nov. 8, and take on the No.1 seed out of the east, South Alabama in the championship match. Kickoff is set for 1 P.M.
