JONESBORO, Ark. (4/28/21) – A player bringing NCAA Tournament experience is set to join the 2021-22 Arkansas State women's basketball roster, as graduate transfer Ola Makurat signs with the Red Wolves after two seasons at Utah.
Makurat is the second graduate transfer to sign, joining Devyn Lowe (South Alabama), and was a standout at Liberty prior to two seasons with the Utes.
"With her experience at Liberty and Utah, and having played in the NCAA Tournament, Ola provides experience and a championship mentality," head coach Matt Daniel said. "Her ability to play inside and stretch the floor as well will be helpful on both ends."
In her two seasons in Salt Lake City, Makurat played in 36 games (8 starts) and averaged 11.4 minutes per game. The Sierakowice, Poland, native averaged 3.3 points per game and 2.6 rebounds.
Prior to her time at Utah, Makurat was a key player at Liberty, averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds as a sophomore to help lead the Flames to a 2017-18 Big South regular-season and conference titles and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman in 2016-17, Makurat played in all 30 games with 23 starts and was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team, averaging 6.7 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Makurat will be the second Polish standout on the A-State roster, joining Karolina Szydlowska. Like Szydlowska, Makurat spent time with the Poland National Teams, playing for the U-18 and U-20 squads. She is the older sister of Anna Makurat, who currently plays at national power UConn.
