JONESBORO, Ark. (2/25/22) – Fresh off winning a Sun Belt Conference indoor title in both the long and triple jumps, Arkansas State track and field's Carter Shell is set to represent the Scarlet and Black against some of the nation's top athletes.
He joins A-State horizontal jumps coach Will Williams at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Saturday and Sunday at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. Shell and Williams are set to compete Sunday in the men's long jump, which is slated for a 4:10 p.m. CT start. Both days' action from 4-6 p.m. CT can be viewed live on CNBC, NBCSports.com/live, the NBC Sports app and Peacock.
The meet serves as Team USATF's qualifying meet for the World Athletics Indoor Champions, which is slated for March 11-13, 2022, in Belgrade, Serbia. In most events, the top two finishers per event are in line to make the world championships squad, provided they have met the international qualifying standard.
Earlier this week, under Williams' guidance, Shell captured the league long jump title with an indoor-best leap of 7.79m (25-6.75) on Monday. He then followed it on Tuesday by taking gold in the triple jump with a mark of 15.30m (50-2.5) – an overall collegiate best. Shell is the first A-State athlete to take conference gold in both horizontal jumps in the indoor setting, and the first overall since Roelf Pienaar did so outdoors in 2016.
Williams, a former NCAA Champion in the long jump, owns a season-best mark of 7.99m (26-2.75). He was a three-year letterwinner at Texas A&M from 2016-18 before being hired at A-State ahead of the 2020-21 season.
