A-State Falls at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (5/7/22) – The Arkansas State baseball team plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut South Alabama's early 4-0 lead in half, but the Jaguars scored nine in the seventh to break the Sun Belt Conference contest open before going on to a 13-2 victory Saturday at Eddie Stanky Field.

A-State starter Will Nash (1-5) went six innings on the mound, allowing five hits and just three earned runs while striking out six batters to keep the Red Wolves within striking distance. However, South Alabama put up nine hits in its big seventh inning following Nash's exit to take a commanding lead.

Led by Jared Toler and Wil French with two hits each, A-State (10-31, 5-17 SBC) finished the outing with seven hits while leaving six base runners stranded.  South Alabama (26-19, 12-11) countered with 14 hits and left six on base as well.

Each of Toler's hits went for extra bases and he drove in one of A-State's two runs in the fifth, while French accounted for the Red Wolves' other RBI. USA starter Tyler Lehrmann (3-2) gave up both of A-State's runs, but went five full innings and claimed the win.

The Jaguars struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning and one in both the third and fourth to go up 4-0.  The Red Wolves used three hits in the fifth inning to push Jacob Hager and French across the plate and had runners on second and third base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
