MONROE, La. (1/25/24) – Despite an impressive shooting display, Arkansas State women's basketball (10-8, 4-4 SBC) was unable to catch ULM (14-5, 6-2 SBC) during an 84-76 defeat on Thursday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Cheyenne Forney netted a season-high 16 points, which tied
Lauryn Pendleton for the team high in the contest.
Anna Griffin (14) and
Izzy Higginbottom (12) also reached double digits, with the latter nearly recording a triple double with eight assists and seven rebounds.
As a team, the Red Wolves shot 27-for-63 (43 percent) from the field and 11-for-22 (50 percent) from 3-point range. The Scarlet and Black recorded 19 assists, which is the most against a Division I opponent this season.
A-State cut the deficit to two points after ULM jumped out to an early 12-5 lead, but the Warhawks were able to create separation and end the quarter ahead 20-14. ULM drained four 3-pointers and scored seven points on fast break opportunities during the opening period.
The deficit swelled to nine with 9:10 to go in the second, but the Scarlet and Black would find their groove from beyond the arc. The Red Wolves shot 4-of-5 (80 percent) from 3-point range and claimed a 35-34 lead before the Warhawks closed the half on a four-point run.
Both sides finished with six 3-pointers in what was a highly competitive first half. ULM held a 19-18 advantage on the boards while A-State had a 9-7 lead in assists. Despite trailing in rebounds during the half, the Red Wolves capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Warhawks 12-2.
Forney opened the quarter with five consecutive makes as the Red Wolves looked to keep tempo with their opponent. ULM led 49-48 with 4:25 to go in the quarter before a 13-4 run allowed the Warhawks to take a 10-point lead into the fourth.
ULM maintained their lead as both sides exchanged shots throughout the final quarter, but back-to-back threes from Griffin made the score 79-76 with 2:40 left to play. It would be the last basket scored for A-State, as ULM used a 6-0 run to put the game away.
The Warhawks made 13 3-pointers on 29 attempts and had five players score 10-plus points, both being the most by an opponent this season.
