JONESBORO, Ark. (10/1/24) – Thomas Schmidt won individual medalist honors and set the program record low 54-hole total to lead the Arkansas State men's golf team to its ninth consecutive Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate title at RidgePointe Country Club.
Schmidt collects his third career medalist honor, first solo title, tied with Julien Sale (2018-22) for the third-most in program history. After totaling 12-under par 132 Monday, Schmidt carded a second consecutive 7-under par 65 to finish up at 19-under par 197 to set the program record 54-hole total. Schmidt's 54-hole total was one better than Tanner Napier's 198 (-18) at the Loyola Intercollegiate in the 2015-16 season. Schmidt's previous 54-hole total best was 17-under 199 at the 2023 Golfweek Fall Challenge.
A-State had seven players place inside the top 20, including five in the top 10. Milan Reed was second with a 14-under 202 (67-69-66) total, tied for the fifth lowest in program history. Jake Lile (69-68-70) and Chris Somerfield (67-68-72) tied for seventh at 7-under par 207 while Pierce Johnson tied for 10th at 6-under par 210 (70-71-69). Jack Maxey (-5) tied for 14th, Jake Wallis (-4) tied for 17th and Cole Kirby (+2) tied for 36th.
Winners of Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate for the ninth consecutive season, A-State turned in a 14-under par 274 to finish up at 42-under par 822 for the event, the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history and second top five 54-hole total in three events this season. The Red Wolves topped Oklahoma Christian (-27) by 15 strokes while Jacksonville State (-17), Austin Peay (-17) and Texas State (-14) rounded out the top five.
A-State closes out the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 29-Oct. 31 at the Kapolei Invitational at Kapolei Golf Club in Oahu, Hawaii.
