MEMPHIS, Tenn. (10/10/24) – Arkansas State women's tennis won six total matches on Thursday at the ITA Central Regionals, held at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
A-State won four total matches in singles as well as two in doubles. Two duos reached the second round of the main draw, while Anna Grigoreva moved on to Round 2 in singles.
A-State opened the day in doubles play, with a pair of duos advancing to the second round. Lily Cvanciger and Grigoreva battled back from down 4-1 to win 8-6 over Nebraska's Reya Coe and Emma Rizzetto. Sarah Millard and Carla Muro Castellvi also won an 8-6 match, defeating Nicolly Ferreira and Aryn Walker of Saint Louis.
"I'm so proud how we did and worked today as a team," Cvanciger said. "All the doubles had incredible energy and team spirit. In singles I felt so confident, and the energy and support from the girls and coaches was simply unbelievable. Everyone did their best out there and together, as a TEAM, we crushed the day!"
Ariadna Fernandez and Abigail Thurmer dropped an 8-6 decision to another Nebraska pair – Lucy Loy and Ana Carmen Zamburek.
In the opening round of singles play, Grigoreva topped Memphis' Alice Amendola 6-1, 7-5 while Muro Castellvi dropped a straight-set decision to 119th-ranked Daianne Hayashida of Iowa, seeded ninth in the field.
Both Fernandez and Carbo Chova and advanced in Flight B of singles with wins. Fernandez saved five match points in the second set to defeat Paola Garcia of Lindenwood 2-6, 7-6(6), 1-0(8) while Carbo Chova battled back from down 4-1 in the second set and then 7-1 in the match tiebreak to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(8) victory against Central Arkansas' Seohyun Park. In Flight B consolation, Thurmer dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match to Sarah Ben Aba of Lindenwood.
In Flight C, Cvanciger earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Lucy Loy of Nebraska, and Sarah Millard dropped a tough 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(4) decision to Arkansas' Katie Ferguson.
The second round of doubles play begins at 9 a.m. Friday. Cvanciger and Grigoreva will face Kansas' 69th-ranked pair of Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse Van Vuuren, while Millard and Muro Castellvi is set to take on Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Maria Santos of Kansas State.
In singles, Grigoreva will face second-seeded Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State – ranked 11th nationally – in the second round, set for a 10 a.m. start while Muro Castellvi opens consolation draw play against Gloriana Nahum of Oklahoma.
Fernandez is set to face Sati Aubakirova of Wichita State, with Carbo Chova slated to play Missouri's Sarah Hartel.
At approximately 2 p.m., Cvanciger will take on North Dakota's Ethel Li in the second round of Flight C.
