Red Wolves Sweep Warhawks Friday

10/11/2024 9:12:00 PM

JONESBORO, Ark. (10/11/24) – Another dynamic defense performance lifted the Arkansas State volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 29-27) sweep over ULM Friday night inside First National Bank Arena.

A-State (14-3, 4-1 SBC) limited the Warhawks (4-13, 0-5) to just .080 on the attack while knocking down a dozen blocks, including the match-clinching point. The Red Wolves were especially stingy on defense in the final two sets, holding ULM to sub-.100 marks.

Devyn Lewis led all players with 12 kills on the night, while Haley Glunz led the way with seven blocks and six kills on 15 error-free attacks (.400). Four Red wolves had double-digit digs, led by Sarah Martinez's 24. Erin Madigan had a double-double with 26 assists and a dozen digs, while Mia Maloney and Kaitlin Whitlock had 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

ULM led 15-9 in the first set following an ace by Cameron Rogers, but A-State roared back to tie it at 16 before taking an 18-17 lead on a block by Glunz and Abby Harris. Madigan later served an ace to put the Red Wolves ahead 21-19, but the Warhawks sided out on a kill by Lydia Mesusan. Daedrianna Cail then answered with one of her four kills, sparking a set-clinching 4-1 run to give A-State a one-set advantage.

A-State overcame another ULM lead in the second set, this time using a 7-0 run to take a 15-9 lead that would grow as the frame progressed. Cail (4 blocks) and Whitlock teamed up on a block to put the Scarlet and Black ahead 20-10, with Harris clinching the 25-13 second-set victory with a kill.

The Red Wolves owned a commanding 17-10 lead in the third set, but ULM rallied to tie it at 19 on an ace by Hannah Redrow. The visitors then held a set point opportunity to extend the match after a kill from Madeline Villarreal, but Lewis and Whitlock delivered back-to-back kills to send the set into extra points. ULM saved a pair of match points, but a service error followed by a block from Cail and Addison Collum would clinch the match with a 29-27 win in the third.
